LSU sophomore Kennedi Edney and senior Erin Macadaeg were named the Southeastern Conference Gymnast of the Week and Specialist of the Week, respectively, the league announced Tuesday.
In its 198.100-196.626 win over Auburn, LSU clinched the SEC regular season championship and behind a career high all-around score of 39.775 from Edney. Her score ties for the third-highest in the nation and tied with teammate Sarah Finnegan for best in the SEC.
This is Edney’s first SEC weekly honor of the season and the second of her career.
Edney didn’t score below a 9.90 on any event, posting 9.975s on both floor and bars. She won the event titles on bars and vault with a 9.90.
She is ranked in the top-20 in four total events, including No. 17 in the all-around, No.12 on floor, No. 8 on bars and No. 15 on vault.
Macadaeg earned specialist of the week for the second time in her career and the first time since her freshman year.
Macadaeg posted a career high 9.95 to lead off LSU’s beam lineup that totaled 49.525 to tie for the season high.
“It’s such an honor, and I’m so surprised to hear it since I’ve only done it once before,” Macadaeg said. “I was surprised, especially with everything else that went on this weekend, but I feel like it just adds to the celebration of what happened.”
This is LSU’s 12th SEC weekly honor of 2018. A Tiger gymnast has been the gymnast of the week for eight of the nine weeks this season, with Finnegan earning it four times and senior all-around Myia Hambrick* earning it three times.
All-arounders Sami Durante and Christina Desiderio have both been named the SEC freshman of the week, while junior all-arounder Lexie Priessman was the specialist of the week.
*Editor’s Note: Myia Hambrick is a former employee of The Daily Reveille
