“Professional rapper” — and eventually pantless — Lil Dicky gave University students and Baton Rouge residents a comedic performance during Groovin’ on March 22 in the PMAC.
The rapper and comedian took the Baton Rouge crowd by surprise on multiple occasions, belting out the National Anthem, crowd surfing, prancing around the stage with open arms to “I Believe I Can Fly” and taking a snack break to throw lettuce, carrots, hot dog buns and ranch into the crowd of University students. This was all before he took off his pants and danced to his song “Lemme Freak,” which he dedicated to “all the ladies in the crowd.”
The annual LSU Student Government-sponsored Groovin’ concert started at 7:30 with performances from LSU’s official DJ, DJ C-Mix, and local rappers Darker Parker and Bryce Williams.
Lil Dicky performed some of his biggest hits while sporting a No. 1 LSU jersey, including “Professional Rapper,” “Molly,” and his first-ever live performance of his new single “Freaky Friday,” which features Chris Brown.
The rapper also performed his hit song, “$ave Dat Money,” proclaiming it to be the climax of every spectator’s year.
After asking the crowd about Tigerland, using himself as an example to everyone that anything is possible, and shouting “Geaux LSU Tigers” at the top of his lungs, Groovin’ 2018 came to an end as Lil Dicky dropped his microphone and walked off stage at 10:45 p.m.
“Encore! Encore! Encore!” was all that was heard throughout the PMAC on March 22, as Lil Dicky quickly appeared back on stage to deliver one more song for Groovin’ 2018.
Over 5,000 people attended the concert, which was free for students and open to the public.
“It was everything that I thought a Lil Dicky concert would be,” said sports administration senior Jefferry Preston. “It was awesome. He was hilarious.”
Sports administration junior Allie Evans was visibly happy as the students began to exit the PMAC.
“This is the best person [SG] has ever gotten,” Evans said. “It was the most entertaining concert I’ve ever been to.”
SG chief of staff Heather Sullivan reflected on what it took to book Lil Dicky and organize the annual event before the concert started.
“Our SG and student entertainment committee has done a phenomenal job,” Sullivan said. “They have put in the work since August of last year, so for it to finally be here, it’s very satisfactory. Lil Dicky is about to perform, how could you not be excited?”
SG vice president Leah Sanders said that preparation for Groovin’ 2019 is already beginning.
