We start tonight’s Newsbeat with breaking news out of Parkland, Florida.
The Florida grand jury formally charged Nikolas Cruz with 17 counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of those 17 people who died in the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School last month.
Cruz was also charged with 17 counts of attempted murder for the 17 deaths and the additional 12 people who were injured.
The charges make him eligible for the death penalty, if he is convicted. Cruz’s public defender released a statement saying his client will plead guilty if the court takes the death penalty off the table.
Until the court reaches that decision, Cruz will remain in solitary confinement, where authorities say he has been cooperative.
