The LSU Tigers baseball team defeated the Sacred Heart Pioneers 7-0 Saturday night at Alex Box Stadium. Sacred Heart, from Fairfield, Connecticut, is the second of LSU’s three opponents this weekend.
The game, already LSU’s tenth home game of the young season, was one in which SP Caleb Gilbert shined. He went 7 2/3 innings surrendering only 4 hits and not walking a single batter.
After the game LSU Head Coach Paul Mainieri underscored Gilbert’s excellent outing while also crediting the coaching staff for their preparation.
“I think [LSU Pitching Coach] Alan Dunn had a great gameplan going out there against them [Sacred Heart] tonight, and I think that Caleb Gilbert executed that gameplan just masterfully,” Mainieri said.
The Tigers’ bats came alive in the fifth inning as they batted around and totaled six runs against Sacred Heart pitching.
Paul Mainieri mentioned LSU’s struggles at the plate early in the game and how they turned it around in the fifth.
“We didn’t really have a lot of hard-hit balls in the early innings of the game, but we made up for it there in the fifth inning; we had some great at-bats,” Mainieri said.
The Tigers would add one more run on a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning to make it 7-0 and that score held for the rest of the game.
With the win the Tigers move to 7-3 at The Box and 7-4 overall. They will seek revenge from Wednesday night’s loss in Hammond when they take on the Lions of Southeastern Louisiana Sunday at 3 p.m. at Alex Box Stadium.
