The Louisiana Legislature adjourned the special session Monday night without a compromise that would spare the state from $1 billion in cuts when temporary taxes fall off the books this summer.
The mistrust became obvious Sunday night when the House could not decide on the order of the calendar. Most Democrats and some Republicans were surprised when the House heard a sales tax bill before a bill that would limit certain itemized deductions.
It is unlikely one bill would have passed without the other, and members of neither party trusted their counterparts across the aisle to stick to a compromise.
The regular session begins March 12, and few legislators are optimistic about the tone of the session.
Gov. John Bel Edwards said in a press conference he planned to shorten the regular session and call a second special session in May to try and strike a deal again.
