When asked if she surpassed her goals for the 2018 indoor season, senior Mikiah Brisco didn’t beat around the bush.
“I still want to break the national record [in the 60-meter dash] this weekend, so that my name can be in another record book before I leave college,” Brisco said. “That’ll be the peak of my season.”
Brisco has been writing her name in the record books for the majority of her career, as she has been the anchor and lead off runner for the Lady Tigers in the 4×100 meter relay, an event that the Lady Tigers have performed extremely well in during her tenure.
In her junior season, Brisco, along with Kortnei Johnson, Jada Martin and Aleia Hobbs tied the collegiate record for the 4×100 meter relay with a time of 42.12 seconds.
Brisco also tied for the third best time in LSU history in the 100-meter dash in 2017, with a time of 10.96 seconds. That time was good to qualify for the NCAA 100-meter championship.
While confident, Brisco is not one to brag. In fact, after finding out that she was named the 2018 United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Regional Women’s Track Athlete of the Year, Brisco actually was surprised.
But still honored.
“I was actually surprised to see that when I saw it on Instagram, just the honor that comes with it is something really special,” Brisco said.
During the 2018 season, Brisco has continued to write her name in the LSU record books, breaking the school record for the 60-meter dash with an altitude adjusted time of 7.10 seconds, beating out former Lady Tiger great Kelly-Ann Baptiste’s time of 7.13 seconds.
Brisco also tied her personal best in the 60-meter dash at the SEC Championships, taking first place in the event. Hobbs finished right behind her with a time of 7.14 seconds to go 1-2 at the championships.
Brisco and Hobbs have the top two times in the 60-meter dash this season, and in an interview with The Advocate, Brisco stated she hope that they could finish 1-2 in the NCAA championships: “That’s really the plan, so we should definitely get that done… Of course, doing that at nationals on the same team from the same state — that would be something to be part of history.”
Although this won’t be the last race she runs as a Tiger, Brisco knows that the NCAA Indoor Championships will still be emotional for her.
“I really love indoor,” Brisco said. “As far as this being the last indoor race, it’s really emotional, but I’m excited. I’ll probably cry after, but right now I’m just trying to get ready for the competition.”
The impact that coach Dennis Shavers has had on Brisco can also not be understated.
“Since I was being recruited, [Shavers] told me that he had high expectations for me, and just having a coach that has believed in me these last four years has really been motivational, and helped me to strive to be better than I ever thought I could be,” Brisco said.
Brisco and 14 of her teammates will be travelling to College Station to compete in the NCAA Indoor Championships on March 9-10. Coverage will begin at 5:30 p.m. on WatchESPN.com
