After an hour long rain delay, the sun finally came out to play, and so did the Tigers. LSU clenched its first SEC series win of the season by defeating Missouri 7-5 on Sunday afternoon.
Once the rain cleared up, Missouri got the early lead with two runs at the top of the first inning. But, LSU quickly came back to score the next seven runs with dominant pitching by freshman Ma’Khail Hilliard, who set his career-high six strikeouts.
“He’s got ice in his veins that kid,” Head Coach Paul Mainieri said. “He does it the way you’re supposed to do it. A lot of inner self confidence. He raises his game when he gets in difficult jams.”
“People always say to me ‘I love how you’re so composed on the mound’,” Hilliard said. “I just take that as I’ve got to make that pitch better.”
Sophomore center-fielder Zach Watson also had a standout night going three for five at bats with two RBIs.
“There’s still a lot of improvement for everybody,” Watson said. “But, we came out with the win, so I’m excited.”
No. 16 LSU will host Tulane on Wednesday, March 21st at 6:30 p.m.
