Senior sprinters Mikiah Brisco, Aleia Hobbs and junior Kortnei Johnson have been three of the fastest women in collegiate track for a few years now, and they just added another record to their résumés.
The trio, along with junior Rachel Misher posted the fastest 4x100m relay time in the world in 2018 at the Battle on the Bayou with a time of 42.50 seconds.
Brisco, Hobbs and Johnson were also a part of the record setting quartet that tied the all-time collegiate record for the 4x100m relay in 2017 with a time of 42.12 seconds.
And according to Johnson, they can still get faster this year.
“We definitely can improve on that time,” Johnson said. “We actually had a new third leg [runner]. We only practiced one time yesterday, and for us to come out and post that time with the weather, it was a sight to see.”
Coach Dennis Shaver also believes a faster time is possible.
“It was a faster time than they ran last year at this meet, and they went on to set the collegiate record following that,” Shaver said. “So I think this group has a lot of potential to run faster, and I know that they will.”
As Johnson mentioned, the weather certainly did not help, as it was cold, windy and rainy throughout the day. The weather created an environment that Johnson said can challenge a runner mentally.
“You have to be mentally strong,” Johnson said. “You have to know that you can do it even when the weather doesn’t work in your favor.”
Brisco and Hobbs had very dominant indoor seasons in 2017, and have continued their success through the beginning of this outdoor season.
Hobbs won the 2017 SEC Indoor Championship in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.18 seconds which also ranked as the 5th fastest time in LSU Indoor history.
Hobbs was also named the 2017 United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association South Central Region Women’s Track Athlete of the Year.
Brisco was a 2017 Indoor All-SEC and All-American, winning the bronze in the 60m hurdles at the SEC Championships with a time of 8.06 seconds. Brisco placed 8th in the NCAA final of the 60m dash with a time of 7.29 seconds.
