LSU sophomores Claire Coppola and Kristen Nuss won the USA Volleyball College Championship in Hermosa Beach, California, defeating the Florida State Seminoles in three sets.

“It means a lot to us,” Nuss said in a post match interview with NBC Sports. “Coming up to California as a Louisiana girl has been great. The atmosphere around the game was really great. It was just awesome.”

The Tigers were in total control of the first set from the beginning with a 21-9 win.

The Seminoles’ pairing of Katie Norton and Hailey Luke would come back to take control of set two 21-17.

Coppola and Nuss would not be denied, however, as the Tigers took control of the third set with a 15-8 win to clinch the championship.

“We just looked at each other and we knew we were capable of winning it,” Coppola said in a post match interview with NBC Sports. “We trusted in each other and knew we were going to be able to get it done when we needed to.”

Along with Coppola and Nuss, LSU was represented by a pair featuring freshman Hunter Domanski and junior Olivia Powers and a pair featuring sophomore Megan Davenport and graduate student Emmy Allen in the College Beach Championship.

Powers and Domanski were eliminated in pool play, while Allen and Davenport were eliminated by Coppola and Nuss in the playoffs.

Coppola and Nuss’ victory will get to represent the US Olympic Team in the FISU World University Championship in Germany.

“We are super excited for that,” Nuss said in the interview with NBC Sports. “That was the goal coming in. I cannot wait, I have never been out of the country, so I am excited.”
