While half of the Tigers are competing in the New Mexico Collegiate Classic, the other half were competing here in the Bayou Bengal Invitational, and had strong performances.
In his first race for the Tigers, freshman Kary Vincent Jr. finished fourth in the 60m dash with a time of 6.74 seconds, good enough to best Tiger Olympian Damar Forbes, who finished fifth.
The winner of the 60m dash was former LSU football player Jeryl Brazil, who now runs sprints for the University of Louisiana-Lafayette. Brazil transferred from LSU after being dismissed from the football team.
Brazil not only won the event but also set a new Carl Maddox Field House record with a time of 6.55 seconds.
Junior Arthur Price finished fifth in the 60m hurdles final with a time of 8.09 seconds, in a field that contained two Tiger Olympians; Joshua Thompson and Keane Bland.
Price’s performance was special for two reasons: It was his personal best in the 60m hurdles, but also it was his 22nd birthday.
“This was kind of like a birthday gift for me honestly,” Price said. “To run these good times and have fun.”
In the women’s 60m hurdles, junior Brittany Kelly won her preliminary race with a time of 8.69 seconds, and then bestest that time in the final with a time of 8.67 seconds, good for fifth place.
Kelly finished just behind Tiger Olympian Chanice Chase, who finished in fourth with a time of 8.61 seconds. Kelly also competed in the 400m dash, and finished ninth in a field of 27, with a time of 1:01.05.
In the mile run, the Lady Tigers had three runners finish in the top eight. Freshmen Alicia Stamey won the race with a time of 5:10.84, junior Rebecca Little finished third with a time of 5:16.47, and freshmen Amber Desselle finished eighth with a time of 5:27.25.
“I just tried to run my best race and I knew that would push my teammates.” Stamey said.
The Lady Tigers also received a strong performance from redshirt freshmen Amelie Whitehurst, who finished fourth in the 800m run with a time of 2:27.59.
The Tigers and Lady Tigers will split squads again next week, traveling to the Iowa State Classic in Ames on Feb. 9-10, and the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville on Feb. 9-10.
