The LSU baseball team could not complete the series sweep, getting blown out by the Texas Longhorns 11-1 on Sunday afternoon.
The Tigers couldn’t put anything together on the base path, driving in their only run of the game with two outs in ninth inning. The loss ended the Tigers three game win streak and brings their record to 4-3 on the season.
“For some reason we just didn’t have what it took today,” LSU coach Paul Mainieri said. “I told the team when you play games like this and you’re on the wrong side of them it’s not fun at all, but it still only counts as one game.”
For the second consecutive week sophomore starting pitcher Todd Peterson could not go pass the fourth inning. Peterson struggled in the game, giving up five earned runs on seven hits by the Longhorns.
Peterson’s day would unravel in the third inning as the Longhorns put together a two-out rally that scored four. The Longhorns would never look back, shutting down the Tiger hitters before they could put a rally together.
“I think everything that could have went their way went their way,” Peterson said. “At the end of the day it’s baseball and you can’t really beat yourself up about it.”
Blair Henley lead the Longhorns on the mound, pitching six scoreless innings and allowing only six hits. Henley was dominant for the Longhorns all afternoon as he kept the Tiger hitters guessing at the plate.
LSU used five relief pitchers in an effort to slow down Texas. The Tigers’ pitching staff gave up a season high 13 hits to the Texas hitters, and seemed to take a step back after being able to shutdown the Longhorn hitters the past two games.
“We didn’t take advantage of some opportunities early in the game and just kind of let the game get out of hand and it just started snowballing from there,” Mainieri said. “It was just one bad day.”
Junior college transfer Brandt Broussard continued his excellent start to the season, extending his hitting streak to six games. The junior second basemen has been LSU’s best hitter of the early season holding a team-high .478 batting average.
Broussard also leads the Tigers with ten RBIs and eleven hits on the year.
The Tigers will look to get back on track with a mid-week matchup against Grambling on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Alex Box Stadium.
