The No. 17 Georgia Lady Bulldogs entered undefeated on the road. The LSU Lady Tigers entered with just one loss at home.
In the end, a small, but raucous PMAC crowd powered the Lady Tigers (14-6, 6-3 SEC) to a 71-60 win against Georgia (19-3, 7-2 SEC) to improve LSU to 8-1 at home.
“We understood the importance of this game,” LSU coach Nikki Fargas said. “The people who came out to support us, we feel that. They made a difference. It was good to have a rowdy crowd. We definitely have to take care of home.”
The win marked LSU’s second consecutive win against selection committee Top 25 teams and the third over a Top 25 team this season.
“The support of our fans is always key to us,” senior guard Raigyne Louis said. “That was a big boost for us.”
LSU managed to survive early foul trouble as sophomore forward Ayana Mitchell and freshman Faustine Aifuwa both picked up two fouls in the first quarter.
LSU beat Georgia on the boards, 14-12, despite the absence of its two starting post players in the quarter, but fell behind 15-14.
The Lady Tigers would get hot to start the second quarter as LSU powered out to a 10-5 start led by 8 points from Louis, who shot 5-for-6 from the field in the quarter after shooting 0-for-5 in the opening quarter.
LSU managed to hold its own in rebounding tying the Lady Bulldogs with 20, but were overpowered in points in the paint where Georgia took a 20-12 lead.
LSU continued its push in the third, led by Mitchell who scored 13 points and gained 4 rebounds in the quarter after playing just seven minutes in the first half.
The Lady Bulldogs would continue to battle, but the Lady Tigers manage to extend their lead 51-47.
LSU pulled away in the fourth led by junior guard Chloe Jackson, who scored 13 points in the quarter.
After struggling in the first three quarters from the line, the Lady Tigers closed 14-18 from the line for a 24-36 night.
“It helped us solidify the lead,” Fargas said.
LSU was led by double-doubles from Mitchell with 16 points and 15 rebounds and Louis who neared a triple double with 15 points, 10 rebounds and nine steals.
Jackson continued her dominance over conference foes by reaching her average with 21 points, which is currently second amongst SEC players in conference games.
The Lady Tigers out-rebounded Georgia 48-36, but was outscored 38-26 in the paint.
With these two dominant wins under their belts, the Lady Tigers will travel to Lexington to take on the Wildcats in the Rupp Arena on Sunday.
