In 48 out of the 50 states, the flu virus is still being seen as a widespread epidemic. As a result, LSU saw a slight increase in the number of flu cases in January.
According to the LSU Student Health Center, 124 students tested positive for one of the two strands of the flu during last month. Compared to last year, that’s about a 7 percent increase, with 119 students testing positive in January 2017.
Influenza remains high for all of Louisiana coming into February, according to the CDC. But Julie Hupperich with the Student Health Center says she’s hopeful that the worst of this flu season is over.
“Our trend last year was that the peak was January. So we’re hoping that will be the case this year and that we’ll see fewer cases in February and so on,” said Hupperich.
