Beto O’Rourke deserved to be Texas’ senator, not only because he’s more qualified and educated, but because he showed the people of Texas he cares about every single one of them.

O’Rourke campaigned through all 254 counties in Texas. O’Rourke campaigned harder than any other Texas candidate ever had. Most candidates stick to the more populated counties, but he went to all of them. He showed the people of Texas he cared about all of them, not just the rich white people.

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz campaigned towards the 1 percent and the racist middle class who think he’s on their side. Cruz told Texas he thinks DACA is unconstitutional and he supports President Donald Trump’s wall on the Mexican border. Cruz is unapologetically racist toward Mexican-Americans, just like Trump.

O’Rourke proved over and over he wanted to represent all people from Texas. Texas is a very diverse state with many different religions, races and cultures. All those different types of people should be protected, not just the majority.

This was one of the closest races Texas had seen in 20 years. It was the closest to purple Texas has ever been. O’Rourke promoted young people voting, not just old Republicans. It’s not a coincidence that college-educated people and people who live in bigger cities are usually democratic. These people are a part of a diverse and educated community.

Elections have become less about the actual people running and more about which political party they represent. Although Cruz is a Republican, he is also a morally corrupt person. Someone who supports Trump separating children from their parents at the border is not someone I want as my senator. Cruz doesn’t seem to have any opinions of his own. He tried to divide the people of Texas by repeating things he thought Trump supporters would like.

Trump supporters are known for being hateful towards the LGBT community, minorities and women. There is only hate when it comes to these people. The only thing they love is oppressing minorities. I do not want someone who supports Trump to represent a state as big as Texas. I want someone who is from Texas, knows about Texas and wants to make it better.

Cruz knows he could win Texas by doing nothing except sitting in his office and tweeting about how he’s the zodiac killer. By just being Republican, politicians know they can get the vote of white, racist majority.
