The Auxiliary Services Showcase, held in the LSU Student Union on Tuesday, allowed students to learn more about different services available to them at the University.
“We do a variety of events like this throughout the year to have student engagement,” said Heather Gulino, the communications coordinator for LSU Auxiliary Services. “We want to make sure that everybody knows the services we provide to LSU students that make their Tiger life a little bit easier while they’re here on campus.”
Several branches of Auxiliary Services have offices in the Union, including the Tiger Card office. Many University students know they can go to the Tiger Card office if their Tiger Card is lost or stolen, but a lesser known resource is the ability for the office to take passport photos. Students can receive two passport photos for $10.
To promote its passport program, the Tiger Card office’s booth featured an “Around the World” theme. Students could attempt to throw stuffed animals into buckets with pictures of the continents on them. The students who succeeded won Tiger Card water bottles or cups. Students could also receive a $2 coupon to use for passport photos.
The University’s UPS office offers a wide range of services for University students. All students have virtual mailboxes and can send and receive mail or packages through the UPS office in the Union. The UPS office also offers printing services in a variety of styles and formats, which was showcased at their booth.
The LSU Union Theatre booth featured a time lapse video of the setup of the orchestra shell, which employees set up and deconstruct for every musical performance. The theatre hosts off-campus entities, including the Moscow Ballet’s performance of The Great Russian Nutcracker on Nov. 8. But it’s also available for student organizations that want to rent the theatre.
“We love to do things for our students groups,” said Theater Manager Jennifer Doerfler. “We do pageants, talent shows, lip syncs — we work hard, but we have a lot of fun.”
Students are encouraged to attend events at the Union Theatre, especially events hosted by student organizations.
“Support the student organizations that come here because almost half of what we do is student organization,” said Union Theatre production coordinator Jacob Sullivan. “If we could get more students involved in what everybody else is doing around campus, I think it would benefit everybody.”
The University’s branch of Campus Federal Credit Union, also located in the Union, is a full-service financial institution that has been serving the LSU community for over 80 years. Students can open savings and checking accounts and apply for credit cards and loans through Campus Federal Credit Union.
The event was catered by LSU Dining, which offered a variety of foods, including breakfast, snacks, Mediterranean and home-style cooked meals. Students were able to try dishes from each of the different stations.
“I’ve checked out a lot of the food booths,” said sports administration sophomore Christian Mann. “I like to see the diverse group of options.”
LSU Dining also hosted a Teaching Kitchen booth, which featured Vietnamese shrimp spring rolls. Teaching Kitchen is a new program that encourages students to get more involved in learning how to cook. LSU chefs host Teaching Kitchen events at least once a month at the dining locations around campus.
“We’ve been trying to keep the recipes to a dorm-friendly level,” said LSU Dining chef Justin Thibodeaux. “We try to give students the life skills to help take care of themselves. So far, we’ve had a great turnout.”
Students enjoyed sampling dishes from the LSU Dining stations and interacting with different booth representatives from Auxiliary Services.
“This was a very nice experience,” said chemistry graduate student Visal Don. “I think it’s a good experience for the others to try out so they know what’s there.”
