No. 13 LSU is hoping to make a statement this weekend as No. 2 Georgia comes to Tiger Stadium for the first time since 2008, a 38-52 loss.
The Tigers (5-1, 2-1 Southeastern Conference) are looking to bounce back from a 26-19 loss against Florida in Gainesville last weekend. This will be Georgia coach Kirby Smart’s first time facing LSU since arriving in Athens to coach the Bulldogs.
“In 48 hours we have another huge game right here in Tiger Stadium against Georgia, a very good football team,” said LSU coach Ed Orgeron.
TE Thaddeus Moss expected to play
Redshirt sophomore tight end Thaddeus Moss has yet to play a snap for LSU in 2018 due to an injury, but Orgeron expects him to step in for the Tigers on Saturday.
Orgeron believes that the offense has been missing a second tight end in addition to senior Foster Moreau at the position.
Orgeron and offensive coordinator Steve Ensminger experimented with sophomore wide receiver Racey McMath at tight end, but ultimately decided he was better suited as a receiver. Orgeron believes that Moss can contribute in both blocking and receiving in LSU’s offense.
“I don’t know how many plays [Moss] is going to get, but we want him to get more plays than he’s probably going to get on Saturday,” Orgeron said. “If he gets 10 to 15 plays, we’re happy.”
Consistency on the offensive line
LSU has started six different offensive line combinations in six games, but Orgeron plans to keep the same line from Florida against Georgia for the first time.
Center Lloyd Cushenberry has be the rock of the offensive line this season, never missing a full game even after leaving the Ole Miss game early. Those around him cannot say the same. Senior left guard Garrett Brumfield will miss another game because of a lower leg injury.
Junior Adrian Magee will start at left guard again, with sophomore Saahdiq Charles at left tackle and sophomore Austin Decalus at right tackle.
“They’re happy to all be in the same position,” Orgeron said. “Again, it’s going to be a huge challenge. Just because it’s one week doesn’t mean we’re going to be 100 percent. Hopefully we’re better than last week.”
Tyler Shelvin and Dee Anderson out against Georgia
Orgeron announced that both freshman nose tackle Tyler Shelvin and junior wide receiver Dee Anderson will be unavailable against Georgia.
Shelvin has not practiced all week and Anderson was absent on Wednesday.
Anderson has totaled 12 catches for 154 yards on the season.
In Anderson’s absence, Orgeron expects junior Stephan Sullivan and sophomore Justin Jefferson to continue to get more plays at the position. Freshman cornerback Jontre Kirkland was also moved to receiver and could step up in certain situations.
