It was always going to be a battle coming into The Swamp on Saturday, but LSU made too many mistakes on both sides of the ball in a hard-fought 19-27 loss to Florida.
“Too many mistakes,” said LSU coach Ed Orgeron. “We had the opportunity to make plays. We had a chance to go up 14-0.”
LSU quarterback Joe Burrow had been nearly flawless to this point, having only two fumbles and no interceptions.
That was not the case tonight. The LSU offensive line struggled throughout the game, giving Burrow little time to do much in the air or on the ground. The Florida defense totaled five sacks and eight quarterback hurries.
“The o-line, we have to be better next week,” said sophomore center Lloyd Cushenberry.
After jumping out to a 7-0 lead on the first drive of the game, Burrow fumbled off a sack in the red zone and halted any momentum the Tigers has in the game.
“I thought we came out ready to play, we had the right stuff coming out,” senior tight end Foster Moreau said. “We might’ve lost our edge as the game continued to progress.”
When it was a one-point game in the fourth quarter, Burrow threw his first interception of the season at the most inopportune time. Florida DB Brad Stewart returned the interception 25 yards for a touchdown, giving the Gators a 27-19 lead that would stand as the final score.
Penalties held the Tigers back more than anything against Florida. LSU totaled 11 flags for 116 yards. In the third quarter alone, when LSU was held to a just field goal, it had five penalties for 53 yards.
“We just got behind the sticks,” Moreau said. “Whether it was a penalty or a negative play, we put ourselves in bad second-down situations. When we do that, it’s tough to play behind the sticks.”
Four of those came at crucial moments that halted LSU offensive drives or advanced Florida drives.
A holding penalty on offensive lineman Saahdiq Charles negated a 26-yard pass to Moreau and ultimately ended in an LSU punt, and a false start penalty on offensive lineman Austin Decalus took back another 10-yard pass to Moreau.
An interference penalty on junior running back Lanard Fournette gave Florida 15 extra yards after the Gators fumbled a punt. Another pass interference on corner back Kristian Fulton extended a Florida drive.
“I’m proud of this team though, by the way we fought through adversity and fought to negate some of those bad plays we had,” Moreau said. “But we had too many negative plays.”
