There have many rumors floating around concerning LSU’s alternate uniforms for its homecoming game against Mississippi State Saturday.
The LSU athletic department debuted the new all-white uniforms via Twitter Thursday.
Instead of the traditional white jerseys, gold pants and gold helmets, the Tigers will wear white pants, white jerseys and a helmet that changes color from purple to gold.
The uniforms commemorate “The Silent Season” of 1918 in which LSU did not field a team due to World War I.
An oak leaf pattern appears on the jersey, sympolyzing the 30 Memorial Oak Trees planted on campus to honor those who did not return home from the war. No nameplates will appear on the jerseys, paying tribute to the unknown soldiers who lost their lives in the war.
The number font used is a style that was prevalent in the early 20th century.
“1918” is printed on the back of the helmet to acknowledge the 1918 season along with a United States flag with only 48 stars as Alaska and Hawaii had not been admitted into the union.
