In a game where the LSU offense was mightily struggling to convert good field position into touchdowns, Cole Tracy’s number was called often, and he delivered every time.
Tracy went 4-for-4 in LSU’s 19-3 win over Mississippi State, and the team needed every single one. For the season, Tracy has now converted on 21-of-23 field goals, moving him to fourth all-time for made field goals in a single season as a Tiger.
With the pressure on him to deliver on those big kicks, Tracy said he embraces those moments, and that’s why he came to LSU.
“Every time you get the opportunity to put points on the board, as a kicker that’s what you want to do,” Tracy said. “I was just happy to do my part.”
This season, Tracy has made four field goals three times, five field goals once and two field goals twice. Tracy said his confidence level has been the same he’s had through his entire career.
“I enjoy making field goals, and I’ve had a lot of experience, so I think it helps with confidence level when you’ve been there, done that,” Tracy said.
Senior tight end Foster Moreau said he never has any doubt that when Tracy is lining up for a field goal, he’s going to drill it.
“He’s an even-keeled guy, very calm and very confident,” Moreau said. “He does his job at an exceptional rate, and we’re really lucky to have him.”
Since the beginning of camp, senior long snapper Blake Ferguson and junior holder Josh Growden have kept a log of how many snaps they’ve made in a given practice. So far, the tally is well over 2,000 according to Tracy.
“It’s just rhythmic for them, so that makes my job a lot easier,” Tracy said. “When I can be able to trust them and trust my past experience, then I think we’re going to have all kinds of success.”
While the team wasn’t looking ahead to the Alabama game this week, now that it’s next up, Tracy said it’s time to start preparing. Knowing that this could potentially be the biggest game of his life, Tracy said the routine doesn’t change for him.
“This is a moment that every college football fan dreams of,” Tract said. “My entire life I’ve watched LSU play Alabama, and to be in that position in two weeks makes me very excited. I’m going to enjoy every day from now until then.”
