The LSU soccer team improved their record to 5-1 on the season as they defeated the Stetson Hatters 2-0 on Thursday night.
The win extends the Tigers winning streak to five, putting them firmly in the Southeastern Conference standings as SEC play kicks off next Sunday.
The action kicked off early as the Tigers came out of the gate with a big emphasis on the offensive side of the ball. The Tigers had two crosses in the first four minutes of the match, missing their first shot on goal six minutes later.
The constant activity in the box by the Tigers tested Stetson’s defense all night. In the 25th minute the Tigers had their best chance to score when midfielder Abbey Newton passed it off to forward Molly Thompson who made a great move to get a contested shot on goal that was blocked by the Stetson keeper.
With twelve minutes left in the first half, the Tigers put together their best play of the night. On the fourth corner of the game midfielder Marlena Cutura put the ball perfectly in the box as Newton out jumped the defender, heading the ball into the corner of the net just outside of the keepers outstretched hands, giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead at half.
The Tigers continued their offensive barrage in the second half with five shots on goal to bring their total on the night to eleven.
Continued pressure in the box by Tinaya Alexander and Adrienne Richardson opened up opportunities for the Tigers deep in the Stetson box as the Hatters had trouble controlling the LSU players in space.
One of the better plays of the night came on a break away by Alexander and Richardson as Alexander set up a wide open Richardson with a beautiful back kick, but the shot was missed wide left.
In the 79th minute the Tigers broke through for their second goal of the night with a perfect pass by Cutura who set up Molly Thompson in the box. Thompson hit the ball hard and low pass the keeper to extend the LSU lead to 2-0.
The Tigers seemed to hustle more as they rode their win streak to five games, with their only loss coming in the first game against Villanova.
Junior Caroline Brockmeier faced only two shots on goal as she extended her shutout streak to five games. Brockmeier now sits solely in second for most shutouts in school history.
The Tigers will look to extend their winning streak to six this Sunday at LSU Soccer Stadium with a matchup against the Samford Bulldogs at 4 p.m.
