LSU Students are mourning the death of junior forward Wayde Sims.
“It’s obviously a tough day, but it’s one of those days where we want to remember Wayde and what a great person he was,” said LSU men’s basketball coach Will Wade.
Sims was shot near Southern University on Friday. He was taken to a local hospital where he later died. The Baton Rouge Police Department said in a statement that the shot was fired around 12:25 this morning.
The news swept through campus, catching everyone by surprise.
“That’s not a way to die. He’s so young and vibrant and living his life. He’s in his twenties and that’s what you do when you’re in your twenties you live your life. He didn’t even get a chance to see 30,” LSU student Pinky Guidry said.
University student Blake Bueto said “It’s really sad that someone our age that had so much potential and was such a good basketball player had to die that way.”
When LSU basketball coach, Will Wade, got the call, he went to the hospital and spent the morning with Wayde’s family.
“We brought the team together at 6:30 am and shared the news with them,” Wade said. “We had our entire staff, our entire administrative staff. We had counselors on hand.”
The investigation of Sims’ death is ongoing.
