The LSU Tigers got their first Southeastern Conference win of the season in a 2-0 shutout of the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Senior goalkeeper Caroline Brockmeier had a spectacular performance, totaling 11 saves, and completing her eighth clean sheet of the season. Brockmeier now has 22 career shutouts, ranking eight on the LSU all-time record.
Sophomore forward Adrienne Richardson notched her third brace of the season, bringing her goal tally to six, getting goals in the sixth and 64th minute.
The Tigers (7-4-1, 1-1-1 SEC) did well to not allow the Crimson Tide to score, even as they took 20 shots and put 11 on goal. A combination of solid performances by sophomores Chiara Ritchie-Williams, Lindsey Eaton and Lucy Parker helped the Tigers maintain the shutout for the full 90 minutes.
“I thought we got great effort from everyone who got on the field tonight, and also from the players on the sideline, who helped push the players inside the lines to victory,” LSU coach Brian Lee said.
The only action through five minutes was a Tiger corner in the 2nd minute, but that quickly changed when senior defender Alex Thomas made a nice play down the right side and slotted a pass across the box to Richardson who finished with ease from eight yards out.
The first half was a defensive struggle for the Tigers, as the Crimson Tide were able to get 10 shots off, seven of them being on target. Thankfully for the Tigers, Brockmeier was up for the task and didn’t have any trouble saving all seven shots on target.
The second half was a different story, as the Crimson Tide only managed four shots on goal. The Tigers did a great job of controlling the midfield, with junior midfielder Marlena Cutura putting together another nice performance, and owning her role as the engine for the Tiger midfield.
Possibly the play of the game occurred in the 54th minute, when the Crimson Tide whipped in a cross from the right side and had a free header just six yards out. Brockmeier was in perfect position, and made an incredible reflex save, being able to hold on to the ball after it bounced off her chest.
Just eight minutes later, Brockmeier was called into action again as the Crimson Tide put another good cross in, this time from the left side, and a glancing header to the right side of the goal required Brockmeier to make another quick reflex save.
Three minutes following that play, the Tigers were able to get on the board again, as Alexander, with a defender on her back, flicked the ball over her head landing right in the path of Richardson, who dribbled in to the right side of the box and put her shot just out of reach of the Crimson Tide keeper to make the score 2-0.
Following the goal in the 65th minute, the Tigers did not allow a shot on goal, staying compact at the backline and not allowing the Crimson Tide to break the defense.
The Tigers will get a week off before travelling to Fayetteville to take on the Arkansas Razorbacks at 6:30 p.m. on the SEC+ Network.
