ARLINGTON — LSU shocked the college football world Sunday night with a 33-17 rout of No. 8 Miami.
LSU (1-0) struck on its first drive of the game when kicker Cole Tracy drilled a 43-yarder to put the Tigers up 3-0.
Miami matched it with a field goal of their own on the following drive, but that would be all for the Hurricanes in the half.
Tracy is a huge improvement to LSU’s kicking game after Tiger kickers went a combined 16-for-27 in 2017. Tracy was 4-for-4 against Miami, at 43 yards, 21 yards and another 21-yarder against Miami.
He also tied a school record with a 54-yard field goal to put the Tigers up 33-3 with just under four minutes left in the third quarter. It was LSU’s first 50-plus yard field goal since 2014.
A 50-yard touchdown run by senior running back Nick Brossette with 35 seconds left in the first quarter was the highlight of the game. Brossette added another touchdown run for one yard later in the half.
Junior Joe Burrow proved he could be the quarterback LSU has been looking for, going 10-for-23 for 140 yards with a long of 37 yards to receiver Justin Jefferson. Burrow completed his first pass as a Tiger on the first play of the game, a 5-yard pass to Lanard Fournette.
Miami quarterback Malik Rosier ran for a 3-yard touchdown at the start of the fourth quarter to cut the Tigers’ lead to 33-10.
A 32-yard touchdown pass from Rosier to receiver Brian Hightower brought Miami within two scores of LSU.
Miami looked like it would make a fourth-quarter comeback, but LSU’s defense stopped the Hurricanes on multiple drives in the fourth quarter to maintain the Tigers 33-17 win, including big sacks by junior defensive end Breiden Fehoko and junior outside linebacker Michael Divinity Jr.
LSU will host Southeastern Louisiana in the home opener Saturday, Sept. 8.
