This week on the Easter Egg we look at System Shock 2, a 199 horror survial game released in 1999. Developed by Irrational Games and Looking Glass Studios, it was one of the first games designed by Ken Levine, known now mostly for his work on Bioshock and Thief. In System Shock 2 you take control of an unnamed soldier after waking up on the medical deck of a FTL cruiser. You have to fight through hordes of infected, mutated humans, cyborgs, and SHODAN, a malevolent A.I. that helped produce the virus infecting most of the crew. As you play through the story, more and more horrors are revealed about the ship and its crew, leading up to a very interesting ending. The game itself is very good, mixing resource management and horror in a way that never gets too overbearing. The soundtrack is mostly there for aesthetic appeal, highlighting the tension and fear of the game itself. System Shock 2 is a very good cult hit, well worth the time for a play through.
