LSU started it’s season 2-0, but now the Tigers must go into Auburn and face an Auburn team that is ranked No. 7 in the nation.
Offensive Line is set for the Auburn game
Sophomore Austin Deculus has earned the start at right tackle for against Auburn.
Coach Ed Orgeron attributed his decision to Deculus’ experience playing in big games. Deculus played in all 13 games last season on special teams, while also playing extensively on the line against Florida.
Deculus beat out junior-college transfer Badara Traore who has struggled in some areas after replacing Adrian Magee early in the Miami game.
“Deculus will be the starter,” Orgeron said. “He’s had a good week, but Badara is gonna play. Still got some work to do. It’s gonna be big challenge for our whole offensive line.”
Outside linebackers still using a group approach to replace Chaisson
With the loss of LSU’s most dynamic pass rusher, K’Lavon Chaisson, the Tigers are still trying to find a consistent replacement at outside linebacker.
The return of Michael Divinity Jr. from a suspected one game suspension will be an added boost to the Tiger pass rush that is tied for first in the Southeastern Conference with nine sacks.
Sophomore Jacoby Stevens, who has seen time as a wide receiver and defensive back, is expected to contribute at multiple positions.
“Having Michael back helps us extremely,” Orgeron said. “Ray Thornton is coming along, Andre Anthony is coming along and so is Travez Moore. Having Jacoby Stevens play at a couple of positions, he can do some things other people can’t so we have to use him.”
Wide Receivers are still in positional battles
Orgeron is still undecided on what LSU’s best option is at receiver.
The Tigers have averaged a meager 145 yards per game through the air this season. Offensive Coordinator Steve Ensminger uses four receiver sets frequently and it will be critical for one of the receivers to step up.
Orgeron feels comfortable with his number one and two receivers being held by Jonathan Giles and Justin Jefferson, but the remaining spots are still up in the air.
Terrace Marshall, Jamarr Chase, and Stephen Sullivan have yet to prove that they belong with Giles and Jefferson as the permanent number three option.
For Orgeron it will be all about how they perform in the game.
“They’re going to have to do it in a game,” Orgeron said when asked if the players had distinguished themselves. “You can do it in practice in a calm atmosphere but these guys are making sure they can do it in a game.”
