As writers and creatives, we love absorbing media. From stories and books to music, movies and TV shows, our staff is always on the lookout for new and different things to read, listen to and watch. We want to engage with you, our readers, and recommend what we’re into — and hear if you have any suggestions for us, too. We’ll publish our Legacy Loves series on a weekly basis. Give it a try, and maybe you’ll find something new to love.
Harry Styles x Gucci
After Gucci dropped its new advertising campaign featuring none other than Harry Styles, our Instagram feed was never the same. Showing our favorite young heartthrob in exquisite, beautiful suits that bring us right back to his debut “Harry Styles” tour, Styles was photographed holding farm animals in various locations, like a fish and chips shop in north London and an Italian Renaissance garden. While we may not be able to afford Gucci as college students, we’ll be thinking about it for a long, long time. This is good marketing at its finest.
Hannah Gadsby at the Emmy Awards
Awards show season is back and we are here for it. We love predicting winners, critiquing the shows and following the discourse on social media. Australian comedian Hannah Gadsby’s short bit in the Sept. 17 show perfectly encapsulated the post #MeToo era. If you haven’t seen her massively popular Netflix special, “Nanette,” put it on your to-watch list ASAP. Heartbreaking, vulnerable and awkward at times (she lives for tension), Gadsby’s social commentary is exactly what our culture needs to hear. Watch the video below from the ceremony to get a hint of what Gadsby’s dry comedic style is like.
National Voter Registration Day
The 2018 midterm election is Nov. 6, and performing your civic duty has never been more convenient or crucial. Voter turnout is more important than ever before. Get involved, use your voice and make sure you’re registered to vote this Wednesday. Check out LSU Geaux Vote for more information on registering.
“Pose,” FX
FX’s new show breaks barriers for the LGBTQ community as it includes the largest cast of transgender actors for a scripted television series. The drama features a great plot detailing the history of the New York ball scene in the 1980s, an evocative soundtrack and to-die-for costumes. The artistry alone is a feat. The show also tackles the concepts of chosen families, desire, race, identity and discrimination within the LGBTQ community. The writing may be over-the-top, but in a way that draws viewers into the drama and leaves us wanting more — just like the world of ball culture. Already renewed for season two, we can’t wait to see what else “Pose” has in store.
“The Weezer Bracket” Podcast
Weezer is no doubt one of the best rock bands of our time in terms of its staying power, cultural relevance and extensive discography. But, we love brackets and funny podcasts, too.“The Weezer Bracket” aims to pinpoint the worst Weezer song through a 64-song bracket. Reminisce on the group’s many hits and pick your favorite bad song — only the worst will win.
