Early this morning, the LSU basketball team and LSU community lost a fellow tiger with the passing of Wayde Sims.
The junior kinesiology major and Baton Rouge native lost his life from a gunshot near Southern University.
The Baton Rouge Police Department said in a statement that the shot was fired around 12:25 this morning. Wayde was taken to the hospital, where he passed away.
The BRPD is still trying to identify the other individuals in the video but currently, have yet to receive further information on potential interviewees.
The sudden death of Wayde has caused heartbreak across LSU, including LSU athletics director, Joe Alleva.
“I’ve been doing this for over 40 years, and this may be the saddest day that I’ve ever experienced in my career,” LSU athletics director, Joe Alleva said.
When LSU basketball coach, Will Wade, got the call, he went to the hospital and spent the morning with Wayde’s family.
“We brought the team together at 6:30 am and shared the news with them,” Wade said. “We had our entire staff, our entire administrative staff. We had counselors on hand.”
The team began the grieving process together. Coach Wade was very grateful for the out-pour of support from the community for Wayde’s family and the team.
“That’s what makes it so tough for all of us and for our team as well is everybody liked him,” Wade said.
The scene remains bare, and the campus and those who knew him mourn his loss.
Wayde’s life might have come to an early end, but the impact he had on those who knew him will remain forever.
