A major issue across college campuses is getting students registered to vote and participating in elections.
According to the New York Times, only 14% of students cast ballots in the last midterm election.
“I think millennials have the lowest turnout because in years past we’ve kind of just followed what our parents do, what our grandparents do so there’s this overarching theme that our vote doesn’t matter,” said LSU student and Geaux Vote member Elizabeth Veale.
LSU President Dr. F King Alexander knows that this mindset needs to change
“Students need their voices heard, and quite honestly there are a lot of people who really don’t want students voting. I think more and more students need to vote. It’s an American issue that requires everyone to vote,” Alexander said.
LSU is looking to change this through the “Geaux Vote” campaign which promotes students to register to vote.
“I think it’s really important for LSU students in particular to vote because in Louisiana in the next three years we have huge elections, so it’s really important for us to start registering voters.” Veale said. “In Louisiana students have been more active and participating to try to get their voices, so the best way to see those opinions put in action is to vote.”
LSU wants students to understand the importance of voting and what it means. This starts with behind the ballot on October 29th and 30th.
“An initiative, two day forum of talking about the importance of voting, the consequences of not voting, and the battles that have been fought for some groups of people to allow them to vote,” Alexander said.
And Dr. Alexander wants students at LSU to make a statement at the ballot box with their participation this November.
“Well let’s show people and let’s start with our youngest generation breaking every record possible, and LSU students breaking every record we’ve ever had,” Alexander said.
