This wee for the Easter Egg I chose to highlight Skullgirls. Skullgirls is a fighting game released in 2012 by Revenge Games. You take control of a very interesting cast of characters to gain control of the Skull Heart, a magical artifact that can grant one woman’s wish. Much like a classic genie or monkey’s paw, however, the Skull Heart will corrupt anyone without a pure soul. Each character’s main story (14 in total) shows a glimpse into their lives as they try to obtain or destroy the Skull Heart. Of course the main point of the game is in its multiplayer. Skullgirls is a very responsive, satisfying fighting game with some of the most detailed hitboxes I’ve ever seen. It has the best tutorial of all fighting games and opens up to a complicated and rewarding combo system. I wouldn’t be talking about this game if not for the amazing soundtrack however. In keeping with the art deco aesthetic, the game is rife with jazzy tunes interspersed with more specific music for certain stages (such as a funeral dirge for the final boss). Skullgirls is a competent fighter with an amazing art style that is well worth checking out.
