This week in the Easter Egg we explore Donkey Kong Country : Tropical Freeze and, more specifically, the works of David Wise. Donkey Kong Country : Tropical Freeze (DKC:TF becausse that is a lot to type out) is a 2D platforming game the came out originally on the Wii U in 2014. It is the fifth installment of the Donkey Kong Country franchise and was ported to the Nintendo Switch in 2018. In DKC:TF you take control of Donkey Kong, the classic ape hero from Nintendo’s past. You find more friends along the way that help your platforming abilities in various ways. It is a really good platformer, with tight controls and interesting levels. Of course it wouldnt be a DK game if there werent any collectibles and they did not skimp out here. Multiple types of collectibles over every level unlock lots of extra content, from music and art to the significantly more challenging bonus levels. The music in this game is divine. David Wise has always been one of my favorite video game composers, especially considering his work on the original Donkey Kong Country, but this is one of his best works yet. It blends a huge mix of genres to really flesh out the 6 worlds you jump through in DKC:TF. It is a masterful use of music and I would highly suggest checking out this game and any other games Mr.Wise has worked on.
