“To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before,” Netflix
Netflix is churning out content on what seems like a constant basis, and its newest film release “To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before” lives up to the hype. Based on the YA novel by Jenny Han, the teen rom-com does justice to a genre too often dismissed and features an Asian-American lead. The casting, set design (Lara Jean’s room!) and soundtrack make it worth the watch. This feel-good movie (and Peter Kavinsky) captured our hearts. You’ll thank us later.
“Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” NBC
When FOX canceled police sitcom “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” fans of the show were shocked to say the least. Taking to social media to express their discontent with the parent network, a millennial firestorm was quickly created until NBC saved the day and picked up the show a day later. Known for its quirky characters and comedy, the writing on B99 is pure gold, and this mini-emotional rollercoaster prompted us to rewatch the show in preparation for season six, to be released around mid-2019. Catch us quoting “Cool cool cool cool, no doubt no doubt no doubt,” at all times of the day.
Chrissy Teigen’s “John’s Breakfast Sandwiches”
Chrissy Teigen’s cookbook was published more than two years ago, but we haven’t stopped craving her delicious recipes. The Twitter personality you know and love shines through with anecdotes and witty instructions. This go-to brunch special, featuring easy-to-make sweet and spicy pork breakfast sausages, will be holding us over until “Cravings: Hungry for More” is released on Sept. 18.
“Keep It!” Podcast, Crooked Media
Co-hosted by culture critic Ira Madison III, writer Kara Brown and writer/producer Louis Virtel, “Keep It!” offers hilarious and insightful commentary on current events in pop culture and politics each week. The dynamic between these three (follow them on Twitter, you won’t regret it) makes the show an easy yet informative listen, and they frequently host guests from the entertainment industry. Bonus: the show highlights minorities’ perspectives, so hearing from Madison, Brown and Virtel gives listeners a different take on issues.
“God is a woman” music video, Ariana Grande and “PYNK,” Janelle Monae
We’ve been mega-inspired by these female-centric bops lately. Both Grande’s “God is a woman” (debuted last month) and Monae’s “PYNK” (debuted in April) are visual masterpieces, including special effects, editing and set design. Not to mention the divine feminine symbolism evident in nearly every aspect of both videos, like Monae’s vagina pants and Grande’s sensuality. Both videos are artistically impressive and technically concise, as are each star’s recent albums, “Dirty Computer,” from Monae and “Sweetener” from Grande.
