American’s now spend an average of five hours a day on their smartphones, with more than half of this time being allocated to social media.
Karli Willis, an LSU graduate, along with many other millennials found a way to capitalize on a new business venture. Blogging.
Also referred to as influencers, Willis is a part of a community of people who post inspiration and tips on fashion, travel and beauty. Her full time job as a marketing director for a women’s retail company allows her to see both sides of the business.
Whenever people shop links through Karli’s website or instagram, programs such as ‘Like to Know It’ and ‘Reward Style’, allow her to make a commission. This is how some full time fashion bloggers make over $100,000 a year.
Karli works with stores like Nordstrom, Revolve and Shopbop to promote their clothing, but also showcases things like hotels, beauty products, etc. Essentially, telling people about her experiences with such and if she recommends them or not. All of these things are paid sponsorships or campaigns.
Millenials have shown the world that the 9 to 5 desk job is not for them and Willis is just one example of the many new careers made possible by social media.
