After four hours in the hot Louisiana sun, the LSU soccer team missed a myriad of chances and fell to Villanova in their season opener 2-1.
Senior striker Alex Thomas scored the lone goal for the Lady Tigers off of a penalty kick, but Villanova goalkeeper Hensley Hancuff stopped all of the Tigers other chances, totaling six saves.
The Tigers also had 13 corner kicks, but were not able to capitalize on any of them.
After controlling the majority of the possession in the first half, the Tigers out slow in the second half following an hour-long lightning delay, and the Lady Wildcats struck for the first goal of the game in the 46th minute.
It was in the 66th minute that LSU was awarded a penalty kick, and Thomas wasted no time scoring her first goal of the season, continuing her goal-scoring success from the 2017 season, when she scored eight goals.
The Tigers had one last chance on a corner kick in the 89th minute to score the game winner, but were unable to convert, and the game went into extra time.
Just three minutes into extra time, Lady Wildcat Bri Austin was able to dribble into the right side of the box and place a shot just outside the reach of senior goalkeeper Caroline Brockmeier.
The Lady Tigers will travel to Lynchburg, Virginia for their second match of the season facing off against Liberty on Thursday night at 5 p.m.
