Sunday couldn’t get much worse for the No. 11 LSU baseball team.
Unranked Georgia(11-3, 3-3) scored first and held the Tigers late for a 3-2 win to sweep Sunday’s doubleheader and take 2-of-3 from LSU (17-7, 1-5) in the series.
Georgia tacked on the first run of the game as junior second baseman Levi Hyams hit an RBI single and advanced to second on junior left fielder Trey Watkins’ first error of the game. Hyams came home on a two-out wild pitch by senior pitcher Ben Alsup later in the inning.
Alsup went three innings, giving up three unearned runs. Of the five combined runs scored in the game, only one was earned as the teams combined for five errors in seven innings.
LSU mustered two hits in the first three innings but couldn’t string any together.
The Tigers committed three errors in the third inning. Hyams reached again on an error, this one on a throw by freshman second baseman JaCoby Jones, with one out in the inning. Alsup and Watkins also committed errors, the latter on a fielding error which scored Hyams as Georgia doubled its lead, 2-0.
Georgia junior center fielder Zach Cone then ripped an RBI single to left field, increasing the Bulldogs’ lead to 3-0.
Junior center fielder Mikie Mahtook put the Tigers on the board with a solo home run to left field, his second of the weekend.
Junior shortstop Austin Nola then followed with a double to center field. He moved to second on a groundout and scored as Edward reached on a throwing error by sophomore shortstop Kyle Farmer, inching LSU closer, 3-2.
Freshman Ryan Eades entered in the fourth inning and pitched three scoreless innings to keep the Tigers close.
LSU nearly tacked on a tying run in the sixth inning when junior college transfer Jordy Snikeris singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Sophomore Beau Didier ran for Snikeris and was thrown out at home plate trying to score on a single to center field by freshman catcher Ty Ross.
Ross and Snikeris combined for three of LSU’s six hits on the day.
After a groundout by Jones to start the seventh inning, Rhymes singled to center field. The next two Tigers were retired to end the game.
