LSU coach Les Miles wasn’t the only coach being lured by other college teams in the offseason.
The services of assistant coaches were also in high demand, which led LSU to do everything in its power to keep them in Baton Rouge.
LSU Athletic Director Joe Alleva succeeded in maintaining the bulk of the Tigers’ coaching staff, offering new contracts to strength and conditioning coach Tommy Moffitt, offensive line coach Greg Studrawa, defensive line coach Brick Haley and tight ends coach Steve Ensminger.
The LSU Board of Supervisors approved Friday the extensions for Moffitt, Studrawa, Haley and Ensminger as well as the contract for new offensive coordinator Steve Kragthorpe.
“If you lose one of these guys, you’re going to spend almost as much or more to get somebody else,” Alleva said. “Why not have continuity and keep what you have?”
Studrawa, Ensminger and Haley received raises to their contracts, which now run until 2014.
Moffitt saw the biggest bump in money as he will earn $300,000 a season, up from his previous salary of $215,000.
“Tommy Moffitt is regarded as one of the absolute best strength coaches in the country,” Alleva said. “Before I came here, I had heard of Tommy Moffitt.”
Moffitt was named the 2003 College Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year by America Football Monthly.
The 2011 season will be Moffitt’s 11th year with the Tigers. His new contract also promoted him to assistant athletic director.
Kragthorpe’s contract is a three-year deal worth $700,000 a season. LSU’s previous offensive coordinator Gary Crowton earned $500,000 a season.
Kragthorpe, whose salary now matches the one of defensive coordinator John Chavis, will also serve as the team’s quarterbacks coach.
