The LSU football team concluded its first full week of spring practice with a “partial practice/scrimmage” Saturday in its fifth of 15 spring workouts.
The team ran primarily 1st-and-10 plays along with special teams segments, with the starters and second-teamers taking 35 snaps each, the third-stringers 25 snaps and the special teams unit 25 snaps.
LSU coach Les Miles said the scrimmage consisted of 50-50 run and pass plays and quarterbacks Jordan Jefferson, Jarrett Lee and Zach Mettenberger were “pretty sharp.” Statistics were not kept, but Miles said Jefferson threw two touchdown passes to Russell Shepard and Rueben Randle.
Miles said the quarterbacks have all been benefited by offensive coordinator Steve Kragthorpe’s arrival, and he sees Jefferson using his experience to react particularly well.
“[Kragthorpe] has worked hard to take a lot of the gray out,” Miles said. “[The quarterbacks] are a bit better focused on the things they can do well, and that’s an advantage for Jordan. He’s had years of coaching, and he’s prepared to play his best.
“We probably overloaded him to some extent, by my direction. Now going slow and him as a senior, he’s conceptually picking everything up so much quicker.”
In injury news, senior guard T-Bob Hebert played at left guard for senior Josh Dworaczyk, who has been out after minor knee surgery. Junior cornerback Morris Claiborne also played in the scrimmage after missing time with a high ankle sprain he suffered in the Cotton Bowl. Senior safety Brandon Taylor and sophomore defensive end Sam Montgomery sat out after practicing with green non-contact jerseys so far this spring.
