For the LSU men’s golf team, Fat Tuesday just meant another top-two finish.
Senior Andrew Loupe fired three consecutive rounds of 2-under par 70s, landing himself and the No. 8 Tigers in second place at the 54-hole Louisiana Classics tournament at Oakbourne Country Club in Lafayette on Monday and Tuesday.
After opening the spring schedule with back-to-back third-place finishes in Florida, the Tigers, playing closer to home, used their familiarity with Oakbourne to take home the runner-up spot.
All-American John Peterson continued his consistent senior campaign with a 54-hole tally of 3-under par and no rounds above par to place sixth.
For the tournament, LSU carded a three-round team total of 4-under par to slot six shots behind No. 6 Illinois for the team title.
“This was a solid tournament for our team, especially Andrew Loupe and John Peterson with how both of them played this week, ” said LSU head coach Chuck Winstead in a news release.
The Tigers have now placed in the top three in six of seven events this season, including two victories and two second-place finishes.
Loupe, who began the final round two shots off the lead, used an eagle and two birdies on the front nine to take the lead briefly, but four back-nine bogeys ultimately kept him from the individual title.
Senior Clayton Rotz posted a 54-hole aggregate score of 3-over par for a share of 17th place.
Freshman Andrew Presley continued to improve early in his young career by shooting a score of 5-over par to finish in a tie for 25th place.
Senior Ken Looper had a poor tournament by the lofty standards he has set this year, placing in a tie for 30th after struggling over the two days to a total score of 6-over par.
The Tigers have a week off before again hitting the road to compete in the Schenkel Invitational in Statesboro, Ga.
