Two days after not making the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1998, the LSU women’s basketball team has lost its coach.
Van Chancellor announced his resignation Wednesday afternoon, culminating a four-year tenure at LSU where he went 19-13 and 8-8 in Southeastern Conference play. Chancellor finishes with a 90-40 career mark with the Lady Tigers, including one Final Four appearance in 2008.
“I really enjoyed my time here and I am proud of the things we accomplished … but I feel like it’s time for me to step aside,” Chancellor said.
LSU vice chancellor and director of athletics Joe Alleva said a coaching search will begin immediately.
“I think this is one of the best jobs in the country, so I think we can attract a top coach,” Alleva said.
Chancellor will stay with LSU as a special assistant to Alleva. The deal is for one year and Chancellor didn’t rule out a possible return to the WNBA or commentating.
“I’m going to be willing to do anything they want me to do, as long as it involves golf. If it doesn’t, the answer is ‘I’m busy,'” Chancellor joked.
