The LSU women’s tennis team has won its last three matches after a slow start to the spring season.
Now the team hopes to carry its positive momentum from weekend wins against Ole Miss and Mississippi state into two matches today.
The Lady Tigers (5-6, 3-1) will play their first doubleheader of the season, hosting Iowa and Grambling at W.T. “Dub” Robinson Stadium.
Iowa (2-7) will be up first at 12 p.m. followed by Grambling at 5.
“Iowa made the NCAA tournament last year and was top 25 in the nation for a period,” said LSU women’s coach Tony Minnis. “I except a really tough match.”
Minnis said Grambling is a program on the rise and he’s encouraged his team to take them seriously.
“You’ve just got to come out and make sure we respect them and take care of business,” Minnis said. “I anticipate every time we play a match, with the way we schedule, that we can get beat on any given day if you’re not ready to play.”
Minnis has tinkered with the lineup during the past few matches, replacing the doubles combo of junior Whitney Wolf and sophomore Keri Frankenberger. Minnis paired Frankenberger with freshman Yvette Vlaar, and the duo has won its last three doubles matches.
Minnis said he plans to keep the current lineup the same for today’s matches. The team has really begun to click, he said.
“This is a really young team,” Minnis said. “I think it took a while to figure out what it took to be competitive against the type of teams we’ve been playing. I think the kids are now understanding what it takes.”
