Students showed off their best game Monday night while speed dating at the University’s Faculty Club.
The Iota Theta chapter of Delta Sigma Theta sorority hosted “First Round Draft Pick” speed dating, which featured a romantic setting including dimmed lights, candles and fresh flowers.
Jonettica Manning, finance senior, and Kelley Peterson, psychology junior, both members of the sorority, coordinated the event.
Manning said they chose speed dating to provide an entertaining event in a positive atmosphere.
“It is something fun college students can do that doesn’t involve alcohol or partying,” Manning said.
Manning said the main purpose of the event was to “get to meet new people and possibly network.”
Speed dating falls under one of five programmatic thrusts of the sorority, physical and mental health, according to Manning.
The event consisted of eight tables set with six chairs each. The females chose seats, and the males moved from table to table when signaled by Peterson.
At the end of the round, attendees voted for the person of the opposite sex they felt was most “dateable” and sociable.
Johnny Johnson, architecture sophomore, won among the men, while Stiel Aubrey, petroleum engineering freshman, won among the women.
Phillip Thomas, construction management junior, said he was not surprised Aubrey won.
“She’s very down-to-earth, modest and can hold a good conversation,” Thomas said.
Tara Strauder, accounting senior, said Johnson made an impression on her.
“He was the most memorable of the night,” Strauder said.
“First Round Draft Pick,” was the first event of five scheduled by the sorority for this week as part of May Week, a special week for the organization.
The other events include a “Family Feud”-inspired game called “Gender Feud,” a scholarship tea recognizing young women with high scholastic achievements, flag football and a fashion show to conclude the week, according to Manning.
