Track & Field: Lady Tigers grab No. 1 ranking, men No. 2
The LSU women’s track and field team have reached the top — for now.
The Lady Tigers ascended to No. 1 in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Top 25 this week after a solid performance at the LSU Alumni Gold meet on Saturday.
They overtook rival Texas A&M after slotting at No. 2 last week.
The men’s track team isn’t far behind. The Tigers rank No. 2 behind Texas A&M in the men’s poll, up three spots from last week.
In a change of direction, the USTFCCCA has stopped using performances from 2010 to calculate the 2011 rankings. Thus, the Tigers’ strong performances in 2011 pushed the rise in the rankings.
The Southeastern Conference is well represented in the rankings. On the women’s side, Arkansas (No. 11), Auburn (No. 13), Tennessee (No. 16) and Georgia (No. 19) are all ranked.
In the men’s, Florida (No. 4), Georgia (No. 11), Ole Miss (No. 14), Arkansas (No. 15), Mississippi State (No. 18) and Auburn (No. 19) all trail the Tigers.
Softball: Langoni, Mack win LSWA pitching, hitting honors
Just a day after winning SEC Pitcher of the Week, junior Brittany Mack picked up the same award from the LSWA, the association announced Tuesday.
Junior Ashley Langoni nabbed LSWA Hitter of the Week as well.
Langoni was a force for LSU coach Yvette Girouard’s squad last week. She racked up seven RBIs in five games, notched a .467 batting average and belted a home run.
She’s now hitting .262 on the season with four home runs and 31 RBIs.
Mack meanwhile mowed through opponents during the stretch. She held Auburn and Ole Miss to .155 batting average, winning all three of her outings.
The award is LSU’s second Hitter of the Week nod after senior Anissa Young won it just two weeks ago. Mack’s honor is the eighth Pitcher of the Week award on the season and Mack’s fourth.
