LSU junior center fielder Mikie Mahtook was named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week Monday after belting two home runs against Ole Miss.
Mahtook nearly added a third home run Sunday on a ball which looked to have cleared the center field fence but was ruled to have popped off the top of the wall.
He hit .643 last week with six RBIs and six runs and went 7-for-11 in LSU’s series win against Ole Miss.
He also stole a base and capped the series with a spectacular diving catch in right-center field for the final out of Sunday’s game.
Mahtook is on a 14-game hitting streak and is hitting .515 in SEC play.
The LSU baseball team (20-8, 3-6) remained at No. 17 in the Baseball America poll and Vanderbilt is still ranked as the nation’s No. 1 team.
