The LSU football team scrimmaged Saturday for the third time this spring and last time before taking the field for the spring game April 9.
The Tigers ran 60 first-team plays, 60 second-team snaps and a variation of special teams situations.
LSU coach Les Miles continued to sing the praises of senior quarterback Jordan Jefferson, who threw four touchdowns Saturday.
“What continues to be a routine occurrence is that Jordan Jefferson has had better practices and is throwing the ball better,” Miles said.
Jefferson had the advantage of working with the skills of the first-team wide receivers and the protection of the first unit on the offense line.
Miles said Jefferson’s comprehension of the offense is what’s making him stand out this spring.
“He understands exactly what’s going on much more so,” Miles said.
Senior quarterback Jarrett Lee threw two touchdowns, and sophomore quarterback Zach Mettenberger tossed one.
“Mettenberger has some time [to develop],” Miles said. “He’s taking advantage of his coach.”
Miles has been mum on naming a starter under center, but he made the pecking order clear.
“Currently it would be Jefferson, Lee and then Mettenberger,” Miles said.
Junior wide receiver Rueben Randle was on the receiving end of three touchdowns in the scrimmage, and senior tight end DeAngelo Peterson hauled in two touchdown grabs.
Miles said the defense had two turnovers and a goal-line stand anchored by sophomore defensive tackle Michael Brockers.
On the injury front, junior tight end Chase Clement, senior linebacker Karnell Hatcher, junior defensive tackle Josh Downs, senior linebacker Stefoin Francois and junior defensive end Lavar Edwards missed the scrimmage.
Miles singled out Clement and Downs as players who could possibly play in the spring game.
LSU will return to the practice field Tuesday.
