LSU senior golfer Andrew Loupe qualified Monday for the Zurich Classic, knocking off fellow teammate senior John Peterson in a playoff at LaTour Golf Club in Mathews.
Loupe, Peterson and PGA tour golfer Jim Carter were battling for the last two qualifying spots. All three finished with a 3-under-par 69 to force the three-way playoff.
David Bradshaw and Rod Pampling were the other two qualifiers in the field of 65 after finishing tied for first with a 4-under-68.
Senior Clayton Rotz narrowly missed the field, finishing two shots from the playoff with a 1-under-71.
The Zurich Classic will be Loupe’s first professional tournament of his young career. He flirted with the PGA tour in 2005 when he was the second alternate for the U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 in Pinehurst, S.C. His name, however, was never called.
The four-day tournament begins Thursday morning at the par-72, 7,341 TPC of Louisiana in Avondale.
