The Student Government Senate ended its year by finishing its last organizational session Monday night, where members passed resolutions pertaining to both national and state politics.
The SG Senate passed a resolution to congratulate President Barack Obama, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, the CIA, the Armed Forces and all others who assisted in the capturing of al Qaeda’s leader Osama bin Laden. Speaker Aaron Caffarel said the resolution will be sent to Pennsylvania Ave.
The Senate also passed a resolution to “urge and request” the Louisiana Legislature to vote for and institute House Bill 112, which clarifies the state’s definition of bullying. The bill is sponsored by Rep. Austin Badon, District 100.
The bill was brought to SG’s attention by Spectrum, whose representatives spoke at the meeting. Caffarel said the bill adds a subsection to the definition of bullying, which allows school boards to chart their own courses of action regarding consequences and prevention.
SG President Cody Wells’ sponsorship packet also passed the Senate. The packet will be distributed to potential sponsors who may choose to be full sponsors, half sponsors or contributors to SG.
Wells said sponsorship contributions are used for events such as Groovin’ on the Grounds, Battle of the Bands and finals week. He said the contributions are tax-deductable.
