The Board of Regents-commissioned study of a possible merger of the University of New Orleans and Southern University at New Orleans has been put on hold because of a lawsuit challenging the Board’s makeup.
The suit, filed by by former U.S. congressman Cleo Fields, says the lack of minority members on the Board violates the state Constitution’s instruction that the Board’s membership “should be representative of the state’s population by race and gender to ensure diversity.”
A hearing on the lawsuit has been scheduled for Feb. 24 at 1:30 pm.
