The No. 15 LSU baseball team continues to flaunt its newfound depth of starting pitching.
Freshman Kurt McCune threw six scoreless innings on Sunday afternoon as LSU walloped Wake Forest, 9-1, to sweep its home opening series.
McCune had a no-hitter through five innings before giving up a single in the sixth inning. He struck out seven and walked two, surrendering only the one hit.
Freshman pitcher Jimmy Dykstra relieved McCune in the sixth frame and gave up one hit in two innings of shutout ball, striking out four.
The game was scoreless going into the bottom of the third when the Tigers scored five.
Junior outfielder Trey Watkins had his first two hits of the series and put the Tigers on the board to start the game with an RBI single.
A double by sophomore outfielder Raph Rhymes put the Tigers ahead, 2-0. Then junior outfielder Mikie Mahtook drove a three-run home run to left field for his fourth home run of the series.
After junior shortstop Austin Nola hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth inning, sophomore outfielder Mason Katz hit a three-run homer of his own to extend the lead to 9-0.
Sophomore pitcher Chris Cotton gave up one unearned run in the ninth before striking out the final hitter of the game.
