Former LSU center Chris Johnson has signed a 10-day contract with the Boston Celtics, the team announced Thursday.
Johnson was active for Thursday night’s game at Denver and scored six points, swatted three shots and pulled down one rebound in 17 minutes of action.
Johnson was averaging 16.9 points, 9.6 rebounds and 2.8 blocks per game with the Dakota Wizards of the D-League. He now joins former Tigers Glen “Big Baby” Davis and Shaquille O’Neal on the Celtics.
Boston was desperate for frontcourt help after it traded away forward Kendrick Perkins and Semih Erden before Thursday’s trading deadline. The contract marks the second 10-day stint for Johnson, with his first coming last month with the Portland Trailblazers.
“We had him in camp,” Celtics coach Doc Rivers told ESPN.com before the game. ” We needed a body and he can play a little bit. He’s been terrific in [the NBA Development League].”
The 6-foot-11-inch Johnson and Davis last played together in 2006 when Davis, then a junior, averaged 17.7 points and 10.4 rebounds per game, while Johnson, then a sophomore, averaged 3.2 points.
