The study into the possible merger of the University of New Orleans and Southern University-New Orleans has been halted by a court order, according to multiple reports.
The 19th Judicial District Court issued a temporary restraining order Monday that prevents the Board of Regents from doing any work on the story, according to the Times-Picayune. The order comes after former state Sen. Cleo Fields filed a suit challenging Gov. Bobby Jindal’s appointments to the Board of Regents.
Fields claims the Regents became unconstitutional when Jindal replaced all the minority Board members in December, according to the Advocate.
Jindal ordered the Board of Regents to conduct the study to see if merging the two schools was feasible, citing the two schools’ low graduation rates. Jindal wanted the study done by March 1 in time for the extraordinary legislative session.
