Just when University students thought it may be time to hang up their coats, a gust of cold winter weather has reappeared.
Barry Keim, geography and anthropology professor and state climatologist, said it’s only the beginning.
Keim said Monday’s warm, humid air combined with a recent cold front to produce severe weather around the state.
“Behind that front, cold air will continue coming in across Louisiana,” he said. “Most of Louisiana north of [Interstate 10] will see a hard freeze.”
Keim said students will see cold temperatures throughout the week and into the weekend before getting warmer again.
“We are watching it closely,” he said. “Models are indicating a potential wintry mix for precipitation.”
Keim said though the weekend’s wintry mix is more likely to produce sleet and freezing rain, “snow is not out of the realm of possibility.”
He said it is unlikely possible snowfall will stick to the ground, but weather is always surprising.
Keim said this is not a typical pattern for this time of year, as Louisiana has experienced more freeze events than in recent history. He said the state can expect more fronts to come through this season.
